International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer

In his “World Day of Peace Message 2010,” Pope Benedict asserted, “… it is imperative that humankind renew and strengthen “that covenant between human beings and the environment, which should mirror the creative love of God, from whom we come and towards whom we are journeying.”  Understanding the links between human actions and their effects on the ozone layer is an important part of that covenant.

Likewise, his predecessor, Pope John Paul II, also called for “ecological conversion,” and while the international community has taken some important steps in working towards greater protection of the ozone layer, there is still much more to be done.
