Education is a fundamental human right. Catholic social tradition calls for all nations to provide its citizens with basic education, regardless of gender, religion, ability, or socioeconomic status.

“The natural law also gives [individuals] the right to share in the benefits of culture, and therefore the right to a basic education and to technical and professional training in keeping with the stage of educational development in the country to which he belongs.” ﹣John Paul XXIII, Pacem in Terris, 1963, #13
