Mental health problems still carry a stigma because many do not understand how and why people suffer mental and emotional pain and how difficult it is to treat many mental health problems; the Church has become more outspoken on the dignity of those who suffer in this way.

“Whoever suffers from mental illness ‘always’ bears God’s image and likeness in [themselves], as does every human being. In addition, [people with mental illness] ‘always’ have the inalienable right not only to be considered as an image of God and therefore as a person, but also to be treated as such.” ﹣Pope John Paul II, Address to Health-Care Workers, November 30, 1996
