Emmett Till, born in 1941, was murdered at age 14 for allegedly flirting with a white woman while visiting family in Mississippi. His brutally mutilated body was displayed at his open-casket funeral to show what racist people had done to the young boy. The case of Emmett Till’s murder was a catalyst for the broader civil rights movement.
