Canonized on April 27th, 2014, Pope Francis praised these two men for their “courage and mercy” during their time as leaders in the Church. He also responded to their acknowledgement to “challenges of their time by modernizing the Catholic Church in fidelity to its ancient traditions,” during his homily at Mass in St. Peter’s Square on the day of their canonization in 2014.
