This resource is based on the American Experience and PBS documentary Freedom Riders, which tells the story of a courageous band of civil rights activists who in 1961 creatively challenged segregation in the American South. During their trip from the North into the deep South, Freedom Riders would actively use “white-only” restrooms, restaurants, and drinking fountains, which often got them into trouble either with the white public or police.
