Caring for the Environment and Each Other

In the 2024 papal encyclical Laudate Deum, Pope Francis challenges us to heed both the “cry of the earth and the cry of the poor,” urging reflection on the legacy we leave for future generations. A webinar hosted by the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life at Georgetown University delves into our interconnectedness with creation and humanity.
The conversation begins with Riley Talbot (Georgetown University ’24), who shares her insights from reading Laudate Deum, highlighting Pope Francis’ approach to addressing the climate crisis. Jose Aguto, executive director of Catholic Climate Covenant, follows by emphasizing the importance of the common good and how climate action is deeply rooted in our shared faith. Sharon Lavigne, leader of the faith-based grassroots organization Rise St. James, offers powerful stories from her community in St. James Parish, Louisiana, where environmental factors have led to an alarming rise in cancer diagnoses.
John Mundell, director of the Laudato Si’ Action Platform, expands on Pope Francis’ call to foster a relationship of solidarity with both people and the planet. Lastly, Christiana Zenner, associate professor of theology, science, and ethics at Fordham University, invites viewers to reflect on their unique gifts and how they might use them to address the pressing needs of the world.
