Climate Solution or Environmental and Human Rights Catastrophe?

In her session, Marianne Comfort of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas invites us to critically examine the proposed solutions to the climate crisis, particularly the environmental and human costs of mining. Drawing from Pope Francis’ encyclicals on the environment, she challenges people of faith to consider the intersecting realities of poverty and climate crisis in our advocacy and action. Through stories of mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the threats to sacred Apache land at Oak Flat, she invites us to reflect on the hidden consequences of our demand for mined materials and consider ways to reduce our reliance on these resources in pursuit of a truly just and sustainable world.
