Conversations on Race in the Classroom: Defining the Terms

, , | | October 6, 2020

Conversations about race are more crucial now than ever, and it is important to know how to facilitate these conversations in a classroom. In this series, Justin White and Br. Ken Homan, S.J. share activities that they have used in the classroom to foster dialogue on race with students. These activities while created for students could be used with adult groups as well.

The Defining the Terms activity invites students to share their current understanding of basic racial justice vocabulary and then provides a process to unpack common definitions to use as a classroom community moving forward. Also included are general tips for fostering dialogue around race and promoting an anti-racist classroom.
