The Christmas Season and Consumerism

| | December 6, 2006

During Advent, we prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ. However, consumerism can also compete for our attention and keep us from experiencing Advent and Christmas as truly spirit-filled times. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that Americans spend $60.2 billion on toys and sports supplies, $96.9 billion on personal care products, $88.1 billion on tobacco products, and $40 billion on renovating their outdoor gardens. • prayers and reflections,
  • activities with print-ready handouts
  • discussion questions focusing on simplifying Christmas and remembering its true meaning.
