Darfur Crisis Worsens: A Call to Conscience

, , , | | September 1, 2006

Since the signing of a peace agreement between the Sudanese government and one of the three rebel groups in Darfur in May 2006, the violence has only worsened, with more civilian and humanitarian aid worker deaths and greater disease and starvation. The UN Security Council approved a resolution to send UN peacekeepers to the region – but only with the approval of the Sudanese government. The UN and the U.S. bishops are encouraging the U.S. to take leadership in ensuring that the international community takes action in this crisis which has been called the "worst humanitarian crisis" currently in the world.
