Examen: The Cry of the Earth as a Cannonball Moment

A cannonball moment, in the Ignatian tradition, refers to a specific moment in the story of St. Ignatius of Loyola, when a wartime injury spurred a lifelong conversion. For us, living with the effects of climate change now, we find ourselves faced with our own global cannonball moment.

This examen prayer invites us to consider how we are called to respond to God and the cry of the earth during this important ecological moment.

The Human Element

In the Human Element, photographer James Balog explores how the four natural elements (water, fire, air, and earth) are impacted by the fifth element: humans. As people change the elements through the mining and burning of greenhouse gases, the elements change humanity at the same time through superstorms, sea level rise, wildfires, and air pollution. Questions in the film discussion guide relate themes from the film to Catholic Social Teaching, specifically Care for Creation.
